ABLETON 12 SOUND DESIGN ATLAS

Live 12 Devices Map

Every stock Live 12.x instrument, audio effect, MIDI effect, MIDI tool and Max for Live essential in one place, with what each is actually best for and what changed in 12.0 through 12.3.

This is the lookup page. Before you reach for a third-party plug-in, check here: Live 12.x ships with enough to build almost anything on this site, and the stock devices have a huge advantage on stage because they are CPU-cheap, Push-mappable, and never need a licence check. Each table has a "best for" column written from the sound-design angle, not the manual's. Edition notes assume Suite; Standard and Intro differences are at the bottom. Version tags (12.1, 12.2, 12.3) tell you which point release added or redesigned the device.

Architecture

Live's device model is simple and worth internalising: a track is a chain of devices, instruments turn MIDI into audio, audio effects process audio, MIDI effects and MIDI tools process notes before the instrument. Racks nest chains inside devices. Max for Live devices slot in anywhere a native device of the same type would.

Techniques

What changed in each 12.x release, and why it matters for sound design

Scope: workflow · Level: all · Genres: all

Point releases changed more than usual in the 12 cycle. If you learned Live on 11, these are the things to re-learn.

VersionAdded or redesignedSound-design impact
12.0Meld, Roar, Granulator III, MIDI tools (generators/transformations), Tuning systems, Stacked detail view, Performance packTwo new flagship devices; tuning files make microtonal and just-intonation subs trivial; MIDI generators replace a lot of manual programming
12.1Drum Sampler, Auto Shift, Saturator and Limiter redesigns, Glissando and LFO MIDI tools, Euclidean Sequencer packDrum Sampler kills most "kick layer" racks; Saturator gains a real waveshaper; Auto Shift is a creative pitch tool, not only correction
12.2Bounce in place / to new track, Expressive Chords, Auto Filter redesign, Meld Chord engine + Scrambler, Roar sidechain and routing, Quick TagsResampling is one command; Meld Chord makes stacked chords from one note; Roar can be ducked by the kick
12.3Stem separation (Suite), Bounce Group, Paste Bounced Audio, A/B compare, Auto Pan-Tremolo redesign, Splice integrationPull drums or vocals out of any audio for sampling; A/B lets you compare two device states; tremolo is now a proper rhythmic tool
Bounce in place (12.2) plus Paste Bounced Audio (12.3) is the fastest resampling loop in Live's history. Build a patch, bounce, chop, repeat. See resampling workflow.

Presets to build first

  1. A default Drift bass with Utility Bass Mono at 120 Hz saved as your track default.
  2. An Operator sine sub with EQ Eight HP 25 Hz; see sub bass.
  3. A Drum Rack with Drum Sampler pads, Drum Buss on the rack output; see drum bus rack.
  4. Return tracks: Hybrid Reverb (Dark Hall), Echo (dub settings), Grain Delay. See dub delay send rack.
  5. An Audio Effect Rack with Roar, Saturator and Pedal on parallel chains with a single Drive macro; see Roar and saturation.
