UK Garage Track Deconstruction

A 144-bar, 132 BPM 2-step UK garage blueprint — shuffled drums, pitched vocal chops, organ bass and a warm sub — built in Live 12 element by element, with the swing engineered rather than drawn, then turned into a live set.

The blueprint is a 144-bar, 132 BPM 2-step track in G minor, 4 minutes 22 seconds, in the spirit of late-90s London 2-step and its 2010s revival (the El-B / MJ Cole / Todd Edwards lineage, modern Burial-adjacent darkness in the breakdowns). Elements: a 2-step kick/snare, shuffled hats with an open-hat chatter, a rimshot, a warm sub with an organ-bass layer, a pitched vocal chop hook, a Rhodes chord stab, a string pad and a ride for the lift. Three decisions make it work: (1) the swing is a single number — 62% on 16ths from the Groove Pool — applied to every clip, and the kick pattern itself is syncopated so the swing has something to act on; (2) the bass is two layers that never play at the same time: sub on the long notes, organ on the short stabs; (3) the vocal chop carries the hook and is treated as a drum — chopped, pitched per hit, placed on the 2-step grid — rather than as a singer.

Arrangement

The intro is 16 bars with the Rhodes stab and hats from bar 0, a dry vocal tease at bar 4, and the 2-step drums from bar 8 without bass. Drop 1 at 16 brings bass and the full chop. Rather than a breakdown at 48, the track switches: the kick goes four-to-the-floor for 16 bars while the sub plays straight 8ths — a classic garage move that reads as a lift without adding anything. The breakdown at 64 removes drums entirely; the vocal chop is re-pitched up a fifth and drowned in reverb over the pad and stab. Hats filter back in from 72. Drop 2 at 80 is the full picture with the pad joining at 96 and the ride lifting the last 8 bars. The outro is 32 bars: drums until 128, then hats, stab and pad only for the mix-out.

At 132 BPM a bar is 1.82 s; a 16th is 114 ms. With 62% swing the off-16ths land about 27 ms late. That number matters when you set delays and release times.

Frequency layering

Garage mixes are bright and bouncy, so the top octave is busy (hats, ride, snare crack) and the low end is simple: one sub, one kick, sidechained lightly. The organ bass gives the bassline its "talk" in the low mids without needing the sub to move fast. The vocal chop is the loudest mid-range element; the pad is high-passed hard so it never thickens the mix.

Element by element

2-step kick and snare (Drum Rack, swung from the Groove Pool)

Instrument: Drum Rack / Drum Sampler · Level: intermediate · Genres: uk garage, 2-step, uk bass

The defining pattern: kick on 1 and the "and" of 2 (plus a pickup before 3 in bar 2), snare on 2 and 4 with a ghost before 4. Nothing is on beat 3. The swing is applied as a groove, not drawn.

Drum RackDrum Sampleruk garageintermediate
  1. Drum Rack with Drum Sampler per pad. Kick: a short, punchy, slightly clicky sample; Decay 180 ms; Punch effect 30%. Garage kicks are short — the sub does the weight.
  2. Snare: tight, with a bit of Noise added in Drum Sampler for crack. Add a second pad with a clap layered under the snare at −8 dB.
  3. Program the pattern below. Then open the Groove Pool, load a 16th swing groove, set it to 62% and Timing 100%, Velocity 30%, and assign it to the clip. Commit nothing; keep it live so you can adjust per section.
  4. Drum Buss: Transients +20 for snap, Boom 10% tuned to 55 Hz on the kick only (put Drum Buss on the kick pad's chain, not the rack).
ParameterValueWhy
Groove amount58–66%62 is the classic; 66 approaches a triplet feel
Groove Velocity30%Adds the MPC-style off-beat softening
Kick decay150–220 msShort so the sub note can be heard separately
Swing on the kick’s off-beat hit (the ‘and’ of 2) is what makes the kick itself bounce. In house the kick is straight and only the hats swing; in 2-step the kick is on the swung grid.
Do not also enable Push’s or the Drum Rack’s own swing. One source of swing for the whole set.

Shuffled hats and open-hat chatter (Impulse + Drum Sampler)

Instrument: Impulse · Level: intermediate · Genres: uk garage, 2-step, speed garage

Closed hats on swung 16ths with heavy velocity shaping, an open hat on the "and" of 2 and the "a" of 4, and a shaker-ish 32nd stutter before the drop. This layer is 70% of the "garage" identity.

  1. Impulse: closed hat in slot 1, open hat in slot 2 with the open hat's slot set to choke by placing both in Live's standard "Hats" choke behaviour (use Drum Rack choke group 1 if you prefer Drum Rack).
  2. Program 16ths with velocities: downbeat 16ths at 100, "e" at 50, "and" at 80, "a" at 60. Then let the groove's Velocity 30% push the off-beats down further.
  3. Velocity MIDI device with Random 15% before Impulse so no two bars are identical.
  4. Auto Pan-Tremolo in Auto Pan mode, 1/8 note, 20% — the hats drift left-right with the shuffle.
Live 12’s Velocity Shaper MIDI tool with a ‘sawtooth down’ per beat gives the 100/50/80/60 shape in one click across any length of clip.

Warm sub on the long notes (Operator sine + triangle)

Instrument: Operator · Level: beginner · Genres: uk garage, uk bass, deep house

A sine with a touch of triangle for audibility, playing the roots of the chord progression as long notes on the 2-step kick hits and resting on the organ's stabs.

  1. Operator: Osc A sine 0 dB; Osc B square at ratio 1 and −24 dB adds odd harmonics for laptop translation without reaching the organ's range after the LP.
  2. Mono, Glide 40 ms. Notes: G1, Eb1, C1, D1 following the chords, on the kick hits (beat 1 and the "and" of 2), lasting until the next organ stab.
  3. Sidechain from the kick, 4 dB, release 90 ms — tight enough at 132 BPM to be felt as bounce, not pumping.
The C0 at 32.7 Hz is the lowest note here. Keep the HP at 30 Hz; if the system cannot reproduce it, transpose the whole line up an octave for that chord only.

Organ bass stabs (Wavetable, Harmonics table, short envelope)

Instrument: Wavetable · Level: intermediate · Genres: uk garage, speed garage, bassline

The "talking" part of the bassline: a drawbar-organ-ish tone with a 120 ms envelope, playing short stabs on the swung off-16ths between the sub notes. In the speed-garage lineage this is the whole bassline.

  1. Wavetable, Osc 1 in the Harmonics category at position 35% (a few added harmonics, organ-like). Sub oscillator on at −6 dB for the body. Osc 2 off.
  2. Amp env A 1 ms, D 120 ms, S 0, R 60 ms. Filter MS2 LP 900 Hz, Env 2 → cutoff +30% with a 100 ms decay for the spit on the attack.
  3. Saturator Analog Clip 6 dB gives the bite; HP at 70 Hz so the sub owns the fundamental.
  4. Notes: G1/G2 alternating, the 5th (D2) on the "a" before a chord change. Play with velocity 90–127; map velocity → filter.
For the live set, the TD-3 can play this part: square wave, cutoff around 11 o’clock, resonance low, decay short, accents on. Through the same Saturator and HP it sits in the identical slot.

Pitched vocal chop hook (Simpler Slice + Pitch + Auto Shift)

Instrument: Simpler · Level: advanced · Genres: uk garage, 2-step, future garage

A one-bar vocal phrase sliced into 8 pieces, each triggered on the 2-step grid and re-pitched to the chord, with Auto Shift gluing it to G minor and a short gated reverb. This is the hook; it must be a melody in its own right.

  1. Record or import a one-bar sung phrase (2–3 words). Simpler in Slice mode, Transient, sensitivity until you get 8 clean slices. Warp Complex Pro, Formants +0.
  2. In the MIDI clip, trigger slices on the 2-step grid: slices 1 and 3 on the kick hits, slice 5 on the "and" of 3, slice 7 on the "a" of 4. Use clip Transpose automation or separate Simpler instances per pitch; the Pitch MIDI device before Simpler shifts all slices together per section.
  3. Auto Shift (12.1) set to G minor, Correction 70%, fast speed: it pulls every slice to the nearest scale tone so chops from a different key still sit. Vibrato 0, formant preserve on.
  4. Reverb: Hybrid Reverb Quartz algorithm with a short decay and the envelope shaped so the tail cuts — gated-reverb vocal. Keep it 25%.
  5. Breakdown version: Pitch +7 (a fifth up), reverb 60%, decay 3 s, slices spread to 2 bars.
Treating the voice as a drum (short, placed on the grid, pitched per hit) is why the hook ‘bounces’ with the drums. Auto Shift removes the biggest problem of chopping — out-of-key slices — without the robotic sound of hard tuning.
Stem separation (12.3 Suite) will give you a clean vocal from a mixed source, but it will not give you the rights. Use your own or licensed vocals.

Rhodes chord stab on the off-beats (Electric)

Instrument: Electric · Level: beginner · Genres: uk garage, deep house, 2-step

Gm9 – Ebmaj7 – Cm7 – Dm7 as short, bright Rhodes stabs on the "and" of 1 and the "a" of 3, swung with everything else. Slightly chorused, a touch of the delay send.

  1. Electric Tine model, stiffness 60% for brightness, pickup output 80% for growl at high velocity.
  2. Voicings close, around C4: Gm9 = G3 Bb3 D4 F4 A4; Ebmaj7 = Eb3 G3 Bb3 D4; Cm7 = C4 Eb4 G4 Bb4; Dm7 = D4 F4 A4 C5 (one chord per bar in Drop 1, two per bar in Drop 2).
  3. Note Length MIDI tool fixed at 140 ms so every stab is the same length regardless of how it was played.
  4. Sidechain 3 dB from the kick so the stab's off-beat placement never blurs into the kick.

String pad for the lift (Analog, HP 400)

Instrument: Analog · Level: beginner · Genres: uk garage, deep house, trance

A slow, wide, high-passed string pad following the chords, used only in the second half of each drop and the breakdown. It is a lift, not a bed.

Automate the Auto Filter HP from 400 Hz up to 1.5 kHz in the last 4 bars of each drop; the pad thins out and the drop feels like it is leaving the ground before the breakdown or outro.

Ride lift and FX hits (Impulse + Operator)

Instrument: Impulse / Operator · Level: beginner · Genres: uk garage, deep house

A ride on 8ths for the last 8 bars of each drop, plus a reverse crash into each section and a short pitched-down vocal "huh" as the FX hit.

Operator with Osc A noise, pitch envelope −12 st over 400 ms, through Hybrid Reverb reversed: a synthetic reverse crash that is in time at any tempo. Bounce in place (12.2) once you are happy.

Build it yourself in 10 steps

  1. 132 BPM, G minor. Load a 16th swing groove in the Groove Pool at 62%, Velocity 30%. Make it the default for new clips.
  2. 2-step kick and snare in a Drum Rack: kick on 1 and the "and" of 2, snare on 2 and 4, ghost snare before beat 4 of bar 2. Beat 3 empty.
  3. Hats: 16ths with 100/50/80/60 velocities, open hat on the "and" of 2, random velocity 15%, auto-pan.
  4. Sub in Operator on the kick rhythm, long notes following Gm – Eb – Cm – Dm. Sidechain 4 dB.
  5. Organ bass in Wavetable, 120 ms envelope, on the off-16ths between sub notes. Group with the sub and saturate the group.
  6. Rhodes stabs on the "and" of 1 and "a" of 3, Note Length 140 ms, chorus, delay send.
  7. Chop a one-bar vocal with Simpler Slice; place 4–5 slices on the 2-step grid, Auto Shift to G minor, gated Quartz reverb. Make it a melody you can hum.
  8. String pad (HP 400) and ride for the lift in the last 16 and 8 bars of each drop.
  9. Arrange: intro 16, Drop 1 32, 4/4 switch 16 with the sub on 8ths, breakdown 16 with the chop up a fifth, Drop 2 32 with the pad at 96 and ride at 104, outro 32.
  10. FX at section edges; master Glue + Limiter to around −9 LUFS short-term in the drops. Check the swing on headphones: if the hats sound late rather than bouncy, drop the groove to 58%.

Variations

VariationWhat changes
Speed garage / basslineTempo 135–138, organ bass becomes a Reese-ish Analog bass playing the whole line with pitch slides, sub removed, kick 4/4 throughout with the snare 2-step. Compare the UK bass 140 page.
Future / dark garageTempo 130, hats darker (LP 9 kHz), chop pitched down and drowned in Hybrid Reverb Shimmer, pad from bar 0, vinyl crackle bed, no ride. Burial-adjacent.
4x4 garage / bumpyKick on every beat for the whole track, organ bass on every off-8th, bigger chop with more slices, more claps.
Grime hybridDrop to 140, replace the chop with an 8-bar square-wave lead, sub on a Reese; see the grime deconstruction.
Live-jam versionBelow: TD-3 on the organ bass, the chop played live on Push pads, drums as clip variations with the groove as a macro.

Live performance version

Garage is one groove with a few switches, so the live version is a small set of drum clip variations, a chop you play by hand, and two macros you ride (groove and filter). The TD-3 playing the organ-bass part is the hardware highlight.
