A texture rack is the layer you add when a track is correct but empty: the quiet grain, hiss and ringing that sit under everything and make a mix feel like a place. This one has three chains that each do one kind of texture: a Granulator III chain that turns any sample into drifting grains, a Spectral Resonator chain that makes the grains ring at the chord you play, and a dirt chain (Vinyl Distortion, Redux, Resonators) that adds crackle and a tuned metallic body. Six macros: Grain, Spray, Tone, Crackle, Resonance and Freeze. Use it for ambient, dub techno, lo-fi hip-hop, trip-hop, IDM and under any pad that feels too clean. It is designed to be mixed at −20 dB and still be noticed.

Layout

How it's built

  1. Collect three source samples first: (a) a 10–30 s field recording or room tone, (b) a sustained chord or drone bounced from the pad rack, (c) a short percussive or metallic hit. Granulator III will be loaded with (b) and (a); Simpler with (a).
  2. New MIDI track, empty Instrument Rack, three chains.
  3. Chain "Grain Bed" (Granulator III): load sample (b). Grain size 60 ms, Spray 30%, File position scan on, Scan rate 0.05 Hz, Pitch 0, 8 voices, FM 5% (tiny inharmonicity), grain envelope shape medium. Amp env A 800 ms / R 2 s. Key tracking on so playing a chord transposes the grains.
  4. After Granulator III: Auto Filter (12.2 redesign), BP 12 dB, 1.2 kHz, resonance 15%, LFO sine 0.03 Hz, amount 20%. Then Utility width 120%. Chain volume −6 dB.
  5. Chain "Spectral Ring" (Granulator III + Spectral Resonator): second Granulator III, sample (a) the field recording, grain size 200 ms, Spray 10%, scan 0.02 Hz, 4 voices. This chain is about the resonator, so grains are just an excitation source.
  6. After it: Spectral Resonator in MIDI mode so the resonance follows the notes you play (the rack forwards MIDI to every chain, and Spectral Resonator reads it in MIDI mode). Decay 2 s, Harmonics 60%, Stretch 0, Shift 0, Unison 2, dry/wet 60%. Then EQ Eight HP 120 Hz / LP 8 kHz. Chain volume −9 dB.
  7. Chain "Dirt" (Simpler + Vinyl Distortion + Redux + Resonators): Simpler in Classic mode with sample (a), loop on, Warp off, amp A 1 s / S 1 / R 1.5 s, filter off, 1 voice. This chain is a drone: hold any key and the room tone plays.
  8. Vinyl Distortion: Tracing Model drive 15% at 2 kHz, Pinch 10%, Crackle volume 25%, density 50%. Redux: bit depth 12, downsample 3, Soft on, dry/wet 50%. Resonators: Mode A, Note C, Fine 0, Decay 60%, Const (constant decay across pitch) on, resonators I–V on at the default intervals, Width 80%, dry/wet 30%. Chain volume −12 dB.
  9. All three chains full key and velocity range. There is no zoning in this rack; playing a note starts all three.
  10. Macro Grain: Granulator III grain size 10 → 400 ms on Grain Bed, 50 → 800 ms on Spectral Ring, Granulator III FM 0 → 30% on Grain Bed. Small grains buzz, large grains smear.
  11. Macro Spray: Spray 0 → 100% on both Granulators, scan rate 0 → 0.5 Hz on Grain Bed, Auto Filter LFO amount 0 → 60%. At 0 the grain reads from one spot and the filter is still; at 127 it is chaos.
  12. Macro Tone: Auto Filter freq 300 Hz → 6 kHz, EQ Eight LP 3 → 12 kHz on Spectral Ring, Vinyl Distortion tracing frequency 500 Hz → 5 kHz. All three brighten together.
  13. Macro Crackle: Vinyl Distortion crackle volume 0 → 100% and density 0 → 100%, Dirt chain volume −24 → −6 dB, Redux bit depth 16 → 6. The whole dirt layer rises with the knob so at 0 the rack is clean.
  14. Macro Resonance: Spectral Resonator decay 0.2 → 8 s, Spectral Resonator dry/wet 0 → 100%, Resonators dry/wet 0 → 70%. Tuned ringing from none to bells.
  15. Macro Freeze: Granulator III freeze (Spectral Ring) off → on, Spectral Resonator freeze off → on, Grain Bed scan rate 0.05 → 0 Hz. Switch-type parameters map so that 0–63 is off and 64–127 is on; treat Freeze as a button.
  16. Macro Variations: "Hiss" (Grain 20, Spray 30, Tone 50, Crackle 60, Resonance 0, Freeze 0), "Bells" (Grain 70, Spray 15, Tone 70, Crackle 10, Resonance 100, Freeze 0), "Frozen" (Grain 90, Spray 80, Tone 40, Crackle 20, Resonance 60, Freeze 127). Exclude Freeze from randomization (a random freeze mid-performance is a stuck note); randomize the rest, this rack randomizes beautifully.
  17. Save with Collect All and Save: three samples are referenced.

Spectral Ring

Spectral Resonator in MIDI mode is the trick that makes a texture rack musical: the field recording has no pitch, but every partial that lands near a held note’s harmonics gets sustained. Harmonics 60% keeps the upper partials present; Stretch above 0 detunes them for a bell-like inharmonic ring. Freeze holds the current spectrum indefinitely, which is the "stuck in a frozen room" sound.

Dirt

Feed the Spectral Ring chain a different MIDI note than the pad (a fifth above, or the root an octave down) by putting a MIDI Pitch device before the rack and a second rack instance; two textures ringing at related pitches is richer than one ringing at the chord.
Resonators with Const on and decay above 70% can ring forever. If the Dirt chain is still humming after the note ends, lower Resonators decay to 50% or map the Resonance macro’s Resonators range to a max of 50%.
