Riser FX Rack
Instrument Rack for risers and impacts: Operator noise sweep, Wavetable pitch riser, Hybrid Reverb Shimmer wash, plus an impact chain with a sub drop; macros Rise, Length, Pitch, Filter, Space, Impact.
One rack, one held note, one complete transition. Three riser chains (Operator filtered noise, a Wavetable pitch-rising tone, a Hybrid Reverb Shimmer wash) build tension for 4, 8 or 16 bars, and a fourth chain triggered by high velocity delivers the impact with a pitched sub drop. The Rise macro is the one you automate from 0 to 127 across the build; Length scales every envelope so the same rack works at 2 bars or 32; Impact controls how hard the hit lands and how far the sub drops. Built for dubstep, DnB, trap and hard techno drops, but with Space up and Impact down it is also a perfectly polite ambient swell.
Layout
How it's built
- New MIDI track, empty Instrument Rack. Set the set to the target BPM before you start; envelope lengths below assume 140 BPM where 8 bars ≈ 13.7 s.
- Chain "Noise Rise" (Operator): Osc A only, waveform Noise (white), level 0 dB; B, C, D off. Filter: BP 12 dB, 300 Hz, resonance 30%, envelope amount 0 (the Rise macro moves the cutoff directly). Amp env: A 4 s / D 0 / S 1 / R 300 ms. LFO: sine, 0.5 Hz, destination Filter freq, amount 15% for a little wobble under the sweep. Voices 1.
- After Operator: Auto Pan-Tremolo (12.3) in Pan mode, Sync 1/16, amount 30%, shape sine. Then EQ Eight HP 200 Hz.
- Chain "Tone Rise" (Wavetable): Osc 1 Basics → Saw, Osc 2 off, Sub off. Unison: Noise mode, 6 voices, amount 40% (Noise unison smears pitch so the rising tone reads as a mass, not a note). Filter 2 on, HP 24 dB at 50 Hz (Filter macro raises it). Amp env A 4 s / D 0 / S 1 / R 500 ms. Env 2: A 8 s / D 0 / S 1, routed in the mod matrix to Osc 1 Transpose at +24 st. This is the pitch riser: the note climbs two octaves over the attack time.
- After Wavetable: Saturator Soft Sine 4 dB, Utility width 130%.
- Chain "Shimmer Wash" (Wavetable + Hybrid Reverb): Wavetable Osc 1 Harmonics → Organ, 2 voices, amp A 2 s / S 1 / R 2 s. Hybrid Reverb: algorithm Shimmer, shimmer pitch +12 st, shimmer amount 60%, decay 12 s, size 100%, dry/wet 80%, pre-delay 0, low cut 400 Hz. EQ Eight HP 400 Hz after it.
- Velocity zones for the three riser chains: 1–100. Chain volumes −6, −8, −10 dB.
- Chain "Impact + Sub Drop": Operator, Osc A Sine, level −6 dB, Pitch envelope on with amount −36 st, pitch env A 0 / D 900 ms / S 0: the note starts at the played pitch and falls three octaves in under a second. Amp A 0 / D 1.5 s / S 0 / R 200 ms. Play it at C2 for a sub drop that ends below hearing.
- Add a Drum Sampler (12.1) in the same chain, loaded with an impact one-shot (a bounced reverb-tailed crash or a thunder sample). Punch 40%, Decay 2 s, Sub 20% at C1, filter LP 8 kHz. Two instruments in series in one chain do not sum (the second only receives audio, not MIDI), so nest: put Drum Sampler and Operator each in their own chain inside a sub-rack, both chains full key and velocity range, and place that sub-rack as the first device of the Impact chain.
- After the sub-rack: Roar Single, Hard shaper, Drive 10 dB, Tone 50%, post-filter LP 10 kHz, then Glue Compressor 4:1, attack 10 ms, release 0.4 s, threshold −12 dB, Range off, Soft Clip on.
- Impact chain velocity zone 110–127, no fade. Chain volume −2 dB. Now a soft held note rises, a hard stab hits.
- Rise: Operator filter freq 300 Hz → 12 kHz, Wavetable Osc 1 transpose −24 → +24 st (this stacks with the Env 2 pitch climb, so automating Rise doubles the sweep), Auto Pan-Tremolo rate 1/4 → 1/32 (pan gets frantic), Shimmer Wash chain volume −20 → −6 dB.
- Length: Operator amp attack 500 ms → 20 s, Wavetable amp attack 500 ms → 20 s, Wavetable Env 2 attack 1 s → 20 s. At 140 BPM: 2 bars ≈ 3.4 s, 4 bars ≈ 6.9 s, 8 bars ≈ 13.7 s, 16 bars ≈ 27 s (set Length to max and automate Rise instead for 16+).
- Pitch: Wavetable Osc 1 transpose offset −12 → +12 st (a second transpose mapping, so Rise and Pitch add), Operator Impact pitch env depth −12 → −48 st (deeper drop).
- Filter: Operator filter res 10 → 70%, Wavetable Filter 2 HP 50 Hz → 2 kHz, EQ Eight HP on the noise chain 200 Hz → 1.5 kHz. Thins the risers so they get out of the way of the drop.
- Space: Hybrid Reverb dry/wet 30 → 100%, decay 4 → 20 s, shimmer pitch 0 → +12 st.
- Impact: Impact chain volume −inf → 0 dB, Roar drive 0 → 18 dB, Operator Impact sine level −20 → 0 dB, Glue makeup 0 → 6 dB. At 0 the hard stab does nothing, so a riser without an impact is one knob away.
- Macro Variations: "Short build" (Rise 0, Length 20, Pitch 64, Filter 30, Space 40, Impact 80), "Long build" (Rise 0, Length 100, Pitch 64, Filter 20, Space 70, Impact 100), "Ambient swell" (Rise 30, Length 127, Pitch 64, Filter 10, Space 127, Impact 0). Exclude Rise and Impact from randomization: those are the two you automate and perform.

Variations
- Dubstep / 140: Length 60 (8 bars at 140), Filter 50, Impact 100, Pitch −48 on the drop, replace the Drum Sampler impact with a reversed crash. See dubstep.
- Drum and bass: at 174 BPM shorten everything: Length 35 for 8 bars, Auto Pan-Tremolo max 1/64, Tone Rise Env 2 +36 st, Impact Roar Digital Clip. See DnB.
- Trap: Length 80, Noise Rise replaced by a pitched Operator Square riser one octave up, Impact Operator pitch env −60 st for an exaggerated 808 drop, Space 30. See trap.
- Hard techno: Noise chain only plus Impact, Filter 70 (resonant whistle), Rise automated in 1-bar steps rather than a ramp for the stepped build. See hard techno.
- Ambient swell: Impact 0, Space 127, Length 127, Shimmer Wash chain at −3 dB, Rise automated 0 → 60 only so the noise never gets harsh. See ambient.
Performance notes
- Push: Rise on encoder 1 with a long build is a satisfying thing to turn by hand; for precision use a clip with the automation and keep Impact, Filter and Space on encoders 2–4 for live variation.
- Trigger from a pad: map one Push pad to send a velocity-127 note at C2 for the impact; a second pad at velocity 80 for the riser. In Session view, a 1-bar clip with one note at velocity 127 on beat 1 is a reusable "hit" clip.
- Automation vs macro: Rise is automation, Length is set per song section, Impact is a per-drop decision, Filter and Space are live. Macro Variations capture the three standard builds.
- Resample: once a build is right, resample it. Audio risers can be reversed, stretched and re-pitched, and they cost no CPU.
- CPU: Hybrid Reverb Shimmer and 6-voice Noise unison are the cost (around 10% of a core while the riser plays). Idle cost is near zero since all envelopes end.
